Summer Dental Tips from Dr. Z!

June 4, 2018 By Tori

Start your summer vacation off right with our Discovery Kids Pediatric Dentistry recommended summer dental tips!

Schedule Dental Checkups & Treatment: We know it’s always a challenge scheduling dental visits during the school year. Now is a great time to schedule your child’s checkup, cleaning and any treatment that you may have been delaying. Taking care of recommended dental treatment now before they become an emergency saves you time and money.

Eat Healthy Summer Snacks: If your child is spending time at camp with friends or baby sitter, make sure to provide snacks that are healthy and good for their teeth. Fresh fruits and veggies are in season and plentiful all summer long – being prepared by having these nutritious and delicious options on hand will help your kids to reach for healthy tooth snacks rather than sugary snacks and sodas. For an extra cool treat, freeze berries and mix them in with plain yogurt to help satisfy those sweet cravings.

Stay Hydrated with Water: Help your child stay hydrated and prevent future cavities by giving water instead of sports drinks and soda. All that sugar can lead to increased cavities and expenses.

Invest in a Protective Mouthguard: If your child is staying active with summer sports or outdoor activities, talk to Dr. Z about a custom protective mouthguard. Also, summer is a great time to pre-order those mouthgaurds for the fall sports (football) that will be here before we know it.

Keep Up Your Child’s Oral Health Care Routine: Remember to floss daily and tooth brushing twice a day. You’ll probably have to remind your kids more than usual to spend the time brushing and flossing. Use the start of summer as a chance to replace old toothbrushes and stock up on extra oral care items for those summer trips. Also, don’t forget that we offer a brand new toothbrush after your checkup and cleaning appointments.

HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!!

Dr. Z’s TOOTH TIPS- STAYING HYDRATED this SUMMER!

May 18, 2018 By Tori

With the summer months and hotter weather quickly approaching Dr. Z would like to remind you that hydration is good for your health, but good hydration is important for your whole body, including your teeth and gums.

Here’s why staying hydrated helps with oral health:

*Water washes away the “cavity bugs”!

*Drinking water can help rinse away food and sugars that stick to teeth and lead to dental problems like cavities. It can also help rinse away bacteria that cause cavities though it’s definitely not a replacement for brushing. Drinking water between brushing sessions can help flush away the food particles that bacteria feed on, reducing your risk of developing cavities and ensuring good oral health.

*Drinking water helps in maintaining good oral health!

*Having a dry mouth isn’t just unpleasant, it’s also unhealthy. When your mouth is dry, it’s the ideal breeding ground for bacteria that can cause cavities, bad breath, and gum disease. If you aren’t hydrated properly, you may notice that you develop bad breath. And no one likes stinky breath 😊! This is caused by a buildup of bacteria in your mouth and it can often be treated by drinking more water and brushing regularly.

*A motto we like to say is “If drinking juice always dilute” – mix just a little juice and a lot of water!

Dr. Z and Team at Discovery Kids Pediatric Dentistry are available if you have any questions or concerns. Remember to brush twice a day, floss once daily, make sure you’re drinking enough water to keep yourself properly hydrated and have a FABULOUS SUMMER!

DR Z’S GUIDE TO PEDIATRIC DENTAL EMERGENCIES

May 3, 2018 By Tori

TOOTHACHE

Clean the area around the sore tooth. Rinse the mouth thoroughly with warm salt water or use dental floss to dislodge trapped food/debris. Do not place aspirin or heat on the gum or aching tooth.  If face is swollen apply a cold compress or a bag of frozen peas will do the trick. Take acetaminophen for pain if needed and contact our office as soon as possible!

BROKEN TOOTH

Rinse dirt from injured area with warm water. Place cold compress over the face in the area of the injury. Locate and save any broken tooth fragments. And please contact our office as soon as possible!

POSSIBLE BROKEN JAW

If a fractured jaw is suspected, try to keep the jaws from moving by using a towel, tie or handkerchief. Then take the child to nearest hospital emergency room.

CUT OR BITTEN LIP, TONGUE OR CHEEK

Apply ice to bruised areas. If there is bleeding, apply firm but gentle pressure with a clean gauze/cloth. If bleeding does not stop after 15 minutes or can not be controlled by simple pressure, take the child to a hospital emergency room.

 KNOCKED OUT PERMANENT TOOTH

Find the tooth, handle the tooth by the crown (top) NOT the root portion.  You may rinse the tooth but DO NOT clean or handle the tooth unnecessarily. If the tooth is whole, try to reinsert it into the socket. Have the child hold the tooth in place by biting on a clean gauze/cloth. If you cannot reinsert the tooth, transport the tooth in a cup of milk, and call our office immediately! Time is a critical factor in saving the tooth! Remember if it is a baby tooth, it does not need to be reimplanted.
